Rhenus acquires the LOXX Group

With the planned takeover of the logistics group LOXX from Gelsenkirchen on 1 January, Rhenus intends to strengthen its activities in Germany and Europe, subject to approval by the antitrust authorities. LOXX has a clear commitment to international operations, particularly cross-border general cargo, LTL and FTL business. The owner-managed logistics specialist focuses on the Rhine/Ruhr region in its German business.

The acquisition not only involves the holding company at the headquarters in Gelsenkirchen, but also five operational business sites that are based at the head office, in Pleidelsheim near Stuttgart and in the Polish cities of Warszawa, Poznań and Katowice. “The business sites operated by the LOXX Group ideally enhance Rhenus Freight Road’s existing European network because of the company’s strong emphasis on internationalisation and the cultural variety and skills of its employees. Historically, LOXX has maintained very close relations with Eastern Europe and has developed into a complete international provider by establishing regular traffics towards Western Europe too during the last ten years,” says Thilo Streck, Managing Director of Rhenus Freight Logistics.

The major focus at the logistics centre in Gelsenkirchen, which measures about 17,000 square metres, is not only on cross-border services, but also customer solutions for the chemical industry. The existing agreements within the VTL and CTL domestic general cargo cooperation schemes are set to continue.

The business site in Pleidelsheim near Stuttgart primarily focuses on Eastern European and CIS services for general cargo, LTL and FTL shipments. Within Germany, LOXX also operates as a regional freight forwarder for the household appliances sector by distributing white goods and supplying stores. “We want to continue developing this business with Rhenus Home Delivery. Rhenus can also offer interested customers improved access to Western Europe,” Thilo Streck adds.

LOXX operates three branches in Poland and their major focus is also on providing overland services within Europe. Rhenus is seeking to establish some integration within its independent Polish distribution network here. “In the light of the increasing consolidation of the general cargo markets and the growing demands in the IT sector as part of the process of digitalisation, we believe that we’ll enjoy better growth and development opportunities, improved services for our customers and a clear perspective for our employees for the future of the LOXX Group by being part of Rhenus. For these reasons and because the main shareholder is reaching retirement age, we’ve decided to sell the business to Rhenus,” says LOXX Managing Director, Alexander Brockt, explaining the latest development.

The acquisition is still subject to approval by the cartel authorities.
