EUDR-X is here: New IOP data standard makes supply chains in the printing industry fit for the EU Deforestation Regulation

With EUDR-X Version 1.0.0, the Initiative Online Print e.V. (IOP) is publishing a new open data standard for the automated transfer of information in accordance with the EU Regulation against Deforestation (EUDR). The aim is to create a machine-readable and practical way of passing on legally compliant data along the supply chain, particularly in small-scale, highly digitized print production – such as online print, print-on-demand or mass customization. However, the traditional printing industry will also benefit from this new standard and can make full use of it free of charge.

Standardized. Automated. Sustainable.

With the EUDR coming into force, companies in the printing and paper industry are faced with the challenge of documenting reference and verification numbers (DDR/DDV) consistently and in a traceable manner as part of due diligence declarations (DDS). Without automated processes, smaller orders in particular generate a high level of manual effort and harbor the potential for errors.

EUDR-X now offers the right solution: an open, license-free data standard that can be seamlessly integrated into existing ERP and production systems. It is based on JSON (recommended) and also supports XML and – with restrictions – CSV. Technical documentation, sample files and schemas are freely available. The standard can be obtained free of charge via the following link: https://github.com/initiative-online-print/eudr-iop-standard-exchange-format

“Only through intelligent digitalization along the entire value chain can we achieve efficiency and sustainability at the same time,” says Dominik Haacke, ESG working group member of the IOP and project manager for EUDR-X. Haacke has been working in the printing industry for over 25 years and is an expert in digital transformation at mediaprint solutions.

An industry standard – from the industry for the industry

EUDR-X was developed as part of the IOP’s ESG working group in close cooperation with software providers, print service providers and suppliers. The goal: a simple, interoperable solution that supports both large and small market participants – and maps the requirements of the EUDR in a legally compliant manner.

"The development shows what is possible when companies cooperate across industries. The IOP is not a closed society, but a platform for knowledge transfer, innovation and joint action," emphasizes Bernd Zipper, Chairman of the Initiative Online Print e.V.

Since 2024, the IOP has been actively involved in the EUDR industry initiative #bettertogether to gather regulatory knowledge, share best practices and promote practical solutions.

Next steps: Exchange, integration, further development

With the launch of EUDR-X, the phase of active exchange now begins: the IOP is seeking dialog with related industries, EUDR platform providers and market participants in the supply chain in order to improve interoperability and establish EUDR-X as a universal exchange standard – also in interaction with e-delivery bills, e-invoicing or logistics systems.
