Silver price – Quo vadis
The price of silver could develop spectacularly in the new year. In October 2025, the price of the precious metal broke through the US$50 mark. Silver was similarly expensive in 1980 and 2011. It is quite normal for bull markets to experience corrections. This could form the basis for the next upswing. In both cases, prices fell for a long time. However, there are significant differences between then and now. First, the value of money has decreased significantly.
A silver price of $50 in 1980 is equivalent to around $200 today. Gold cost around $850 per troy ounce in 1980, but today it costs more than four times as much. And silver is still close to its 1980 peak in terms of price. Incidentally, the prices of mining stocks in the silver sector have also lagged behind the price of gold. Another point is that the rise in the price of silver has not been as steep and rapid as it was back then, which suggests that the silver market is less overheated. In addition, there were market interventions in 1980 that are not currently apparent.
Not to be forgotten are the enormous national debts of many countries, which are significantly higher than in 1980. Then there were the famous Hunt brothers, who bought hundreds of millions of ounces of silver, driving up the price. The peak silver price in 2011 was followed by an extremely rapid decline. Price manipulation was probably at work here. Today, the silver price is in a completely different environment.
If a new price rally does indeed start in the foreseeable future, it is good to already be invested, for example in mining companies.
