In China, it is traditional to give lucky money in red envelopes to children or unmarried people during Chinese New Year. Three years ago, the girl from Langfang in Hebei province started buying gold with her lucky money. She was worried that her parents would otherwise spend the money. Each year, the amount was around US$580. When she first bought gold, a gram cost around $66. By February 2026, the price of a gram of gold in China had already more than doubled.
In 2025, gold prices in China rose by around 60 percent, and in January 2026 by 30 percent. The price crash came on January 30. Many Chinese people then visited gold dealers to realize their investments. The ten-year-old Chinese girl has purchased around 30 grams of gold so far and intends to continue buying gold in the future, which has earned her the nickname "genius." In Chinese culture, gold represents wealth and high prestige.
Investors in this country see gold as a hedge and a means of diversifying their portfolios. If geopolitical tensions continue, US policy remains uncertain and central banks continue to buy large amounts of gold, then gold investors are likely to continue to make the right decision in the future. Looking at the central banks, Poland’s central bank (102 tons of gold) has purchased the most gold in 2025, followed by Kazakhstan. In total, central banks purchased 328 tons of gold last year. Investors who value diversification may wish to familiarize themselves with royalty companies.
