Like all nuclear power plants in Japan, the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant was taken off the grid after the Fukushima tsunami disaster in 2011. The governor of Niigata has approved the restart. Now the nuclear regulatory authority must give its approval. Japan wants to move away from fossil fuels, and energy demand is rising, as in other countries. By 2040, Japan wants to cover 20 percent (currently 8.5 percent) of its electricity needs with nuclear energy. So far, Japan has reconnected 14 of the 54 decommissioned nuclear power plants to the grid.

It is more expensive to rely on nuclear energy than on renewable energies. However, nuclear power scores points for its constant supply of electricity. And this is a must in times of rapidly growing data centers and increasing AI applications. China is planning the most new reactors, followed by Russia and India. It is clear that demand for uranium is growing. A supply deficit, especially from 2030 onwards, and rising demand are creating great opportunities for investors in the uranium market.

The US wants to quadruple the amount of electricity generated by nuclear power by 2050. The US government recently added uranium to its list of critical minerals. The aim is to avoid import dependencies and vulnerable supply chains. Several EU countries are also returning to nuclear energy or expanding it. The slump in the uranium market is therefore over. In 2017, a pound of uranium cost only $20; today, the price is around $70. Holding uranium companies in your portfolio could prove lucrative.
