What makes copper so valuable? The price trend for this industrial metal demonstrates the potential for significant momentum. This is because there are concerns about a copper shortage. RBC Capital Markets has warned of a decline in the copper price, primarily due to the U.S.-Iran conflict. Inventories on the COMEX are declining, which could be a warning sign. In the longer term, however, the price of copper should rise, as there is consensus that demand is increasing and copper is indispensable for key future technologies. And industrial metals necessary for the energy transition, such as copper, are likely to experience an upswing.
It is generally assumed that copper supply will lag behind growing copper demand. When it comes to copper, it is always worth keeping an eye on China, as China plays a central role in copper demand. Infrastructure projects and the expansion of the power grid are driving copper demand. Therefore, the news that Chinese energy companies are investing heavily in grid expansion is extremely positive. This is reflected in a significant increase in capital expenditures. The leading energy company in China, responsible for grid expansion, is investing 35 percent more than in the previous year.
For this reason, copper demand is expected to remain high in the coming years. At the same time, copper production growth in China is estimated to rise by only five percent by 2026. In 2025, this growth was still ten percent. In addition, the Chinese government is pushing to build up state copper reserves to ensure supply security. Overall, the medium- to long-term outlook for copper should be good. Royalty companies are also worth considering for investors.
