Today, Opel and the Handball-Bundesliga unveiled the new composite logo, which will officially transform the strongest handball league in the world into the ‘Opel Handball-Bundesliga’. The partners recently announced that the Rüsselsheim-based manufacturer will take over the naming rights to the Bundesliga for three seasons from July 1, 2026, whilst at the same time becoming a strategic partner of the German men’s and women’s national handball teams and, furthermore, the official sponsor of the 2027 IHF Men’s Handball World Championship in Germany. The iconic Opel Blitz will thus make its mark on German handball in three ways at once.
The same applies to the newly unveiled composite logo for the ‘Opel Handball -Bundesliga’. This logo combines the traditional design elements of the handball player with the ball and the goal area – a symbol typical of the sport – with the Opel Compass and its iconic Opel Blitz emblem as the central feature with a fresh sense of dynamism. The existing colour scheme, with contrasts and typefaces that create a modern, dynamic digital look, remains unchanged.
“We are delighted that our strong, holistic commitment to German professional handball, with the unveiling of the new logo, now makes the ‘Opel Handball-Bundesliga’ instantly recognisable to everyone,” said Patrick Dinger, Head of Opel Germany. “Opel and German handball both stand for dynamism, precision and team spirit; they electrify the audience and the centre of society. That is exactly what the league’s new joint brand logo reflects.”
Frank Bohmann, Managing Director of HBL GmbH: “Our revamped, modern and dynamic brand logo symbolises the close partnership between two cosmopolitan companies that consistently stand for success, performance, innovation and emotion ‘made in Germany’.”
From July 1, 2026, the German Handball-Bundesliga will officially become the ‘Opel Handball-Bundesliga’. The season will officially kick off at the SAP Garden in Munich on August 22, 2026, with a match between reigning champions, SC Magdeburg, and the cup winners, Füchse Berlin. The first matchday begins on August 27, 2026.
At the same time, Opel is a strategic partner of the German national handball teams, both women’s and men’s. Both partnerships run for three years. With a holistic strategy combining extensive engagement and financial support, Opel is becoming a strategic partner of German professional handball. Furthermore, Opel is the official sponsor of the 30th IHF Men’s Handball World Championship in Germany. The major event is one of the highlights on the 2027 sporting calendar. Opel will be present across all venues as the official mobility partner – modern, sporty and just as inspiring as the handball sport itself.
This claim is also embodied by the new Astra and Astra Sports Tourer, designed, developed and built at the headquarters in Rüsselsheim, and the top-of-the-line Grandland SUV produced in Eisenach, as well as the new high-performance GSE models. With its hot new ‘everyday sports cars’ Mokka GSE and the upcoming Corsa GSE, Opel is proving how electric, sporty driving pleasure arouses pure emotions.
